The piece draws on folk instrumental practices, «ţiitura» being an accompaniment technique typically used by Romanian traditional folk bands, with a substantial role in defining the character and style of dance pieces. The use of ostinato patterns is therefore an inherent characteristic.

A quasi-permanent background of ostinato accompaniment formulas underlies a discourse that is articulated in four movements, built on the principle of contrast and linked through attacca transitions. Improvisational melodic structures alternate with motivic passages, while variational and derivative procedures are used to create formal articulations within movements, as well as within the entire cycle. The intonations are rooted in commonly used folk modes that are enhanced through a variety of modulation and superposition techniques. The rhythmic systems are similarly structured through superpositions or variations of patterns drawn from folk practices, particularly from asymmetrical ones (5-7 beat measures, alternate measures, aksak rhythm). The instrumental writing is based on the ubiquity of the "țiitura" and therefore relies on a sustained density of the discourse, enlivened by alternating layers and close dialogues between the two partners.

Although the piece is impregnated with the flavour of folk tunes, no direct quotations or references are made, since the approach it proposes is more readily grounded in the conceptual model of Enescu's discourse "in folk character".

The present version for Violin and Piano was commissioned in 2013 by Romanian violinist Francesco Ionașcu, who presented its premiere in London. The violin-piano version preserves the complete initial structure, with substantial development and adaptation as to the piano part.
